In 1836 when Santa Ana declared war on the ‘Anglos’ settling in Mexican Texas, Enrique Esparza’s father sided with the Americans.
The Esparza family moved from their home in San Antonio to the Alamo fort where Enrique’s father manned a canon. Santa Ana took the Alamo after a 13-days siege in a dawn attack on the Alamo. Within an hour, 189 defenders lie dead including Enrique’s father. Later in life Enrique recounted what happened there. His account speaks for the Tejanos who fought and died in the Alamo in their pursuit of a free republic. But it also speaks for the young Enrique who lost his boyhood with his father in the tragedy of the Alamo.
