This biography is about the early life of the inspired Founder of Tuskegee University, Booker T. Washington. Born a slave on a rural Virginia farm, at nine he was freed and moved along with his family to West Virginia where they struggled to live as free people. Realizing that education was the key to living as well as any other man, Booker set out on a long journey to becoming one of America's first great African American leaders.

"…told in precise language and soulfully illustrated with a soft pastel palette."
