Illustration:  A narrative runs through all my work whether in illustration or painting for exhibition. My paintings often follow continuing themes, each painting a 'statement' in a 'story'. However, there is a difference between these two disciplines. Making a children's book is a collaborative art, more like film-making than painting a canvas. Behind every children's book illustrator is an author, an editor, an art director, a graphic designer, and a publisher. As part of this team, one of the illustrator's tasks is to observe life closely; I often use models and I visit appropriate places for the setting. Another important part of the work is to do research. Whether for mythology or biography, I study the history behind the project, setting the stage, creating a cohesive flow for the text. I then proceed to help the rest of the talented professionals try to bring the story to life.
