BABE
DIDRIKSON ZAHARIAS
All-Around Athlete. In 1932 a Texas tornado roared into the World Olympic
stadium at Los Angeles. Babe Didrikson had already made a name for herself
as an American All-Star basketball player. The media was still buzzing with
her feat of winning 5 out of 8 events as a one-woman track and field team
at the National Championships. At the 10th Olympiad, she went on to win
2 gold medals and a silver, setting records still admired today. Excelling
in almost every sport she attempted, she is best known for co-founding the
Ladies Professional Golfing Association, becoming in the process, a golfing
sensation, - one year, winning 17 championships in a row. In 2000 she was
honored, posthumously, with the world title "Greatest Female Athlete
of the Century".
